THEATRE ARTS DAY CAMP, 2012!



One Amazing Week: Monday, June 25 – Friday, June 29

TRACK 1A & B: Intensive, process focused training in MUSIC/VOICE, STAGE MOVEMENT, and ACTING/IMPROVISATION.  Instruction takes place in all three disciplines, with curriculum and activities merging as the camp progresses.
•    Track 1A: students who are entering Grades 4 to 6;
•    Track 1B: students who are entering Grades 7 to 12.
•    Curriculum will benefit both those with limited training as well as those with performance experience.
•    There will be an “open house” class showcase for families of students on Friday at 3:00 p.m.  
•    Combined enrollment for Tracks 1A and 1B not to exceed 30.

TRACK 2: MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP, an immersive study into the acting, singing, staging, and mechanics behind a selected stage show, with the class developing several scenes and production numbers.  
•    Open to interested students who are entering Grades 4 to 12.
•    Except for some combined activities, this group is working independently from Group 1A and 1B activities, with a pair of instructors jointly facilitating the activities.
•    There will be an “open house” class showcase for families of students on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
•    Enrollment for Track 2 not to exceed 18.    

STUDENTS MAY REQUEST EITHER TRACK 1 OR 2, BUT ENROLLMENT WILL BE LIMITED TO FIRST-COME, FIRST-ENROLLED, AND/OR RECOMMENDATIONS MADE BY CAMP STAFF.  GENERALLY, AS LONG AS SPACE REMAINS, IF ONE TRACK IS FULL UPON REGISTRATION, STUDENTS WILL BE MOVED TO THE OTHER.

Students provide own bag lunch daily.  Camp will provide a selection of beverages.

CAMP FACULTY:

Jim Miller: CAMP FOUNDER & CO-DIRECTOR. Jim teaches voice and piano, and has directed scores of musicals in Manitowoc, including the Off-Broadway Productions at the Capitol Civic Centre and many musicals at Manitowoc’s Lincoln High School.  He studied at the Music School at Indiana University, and has undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music Education and Choral Conducting, and was the Choral Instructor at Lincoln for thirty years.  This year Jim will teach in our new MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP.

Matthew Schliesman: CAMP CO-DIRECTOR. Matt is the Executive Director of the Capitol Civic Centre.  A long-time producer, writer, director, and administrator for commercial and nonprofit organizations, Matt has enjoyed a colorful history of arts and other kinds of outreach with young people, including a three-year stint working with homeless youth in Los Angeles.  Matt has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing and is a former Assistant Professor of Theatre at UW Whitewater.  

Kathleen Hemken: STAGE MOVEMENT INSTRUCTOR. Kathleen, a graduate of St. Norbert College, is an in-demand teacher, choreographer, and performer.  Her directing and choreography credits include Bye Bye Birdie, Hello Dolly, Annie, and Wizard of Oz.  She has also choreographed the Capitol Civic Centre’s “Off Broadway” productions of Godspell, Orphan Train, Wisconsin Story, The King and I, and Disney’s My Son Pinocchio.  

Jennifer Kasten: MUSIC/VOICE INSTRUCTOR: Jennifer has extensive performance credits, and many years of teaching experience.  She has performed with the Chicago Opera Theatre, Columbus Light Opera, Dayton Opera, Chicago Symphony, Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra, and has directed/taught various choral ensembles and private students.  Jennifer has a BA in Music from DePauw University.

Bradley Tavares: MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: Bradley is an actor, musician, dancer, choreographer, and director with a wide range of performance credits, including groups in New Hampshire and Chicago, and the Masquers and Babbling Bubblers here in Manitowoc.  Bradley has his BA in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Dartmouth College, and his passion resides securely in the theatre.

Allison Blackburn: ACTING/IMPROVISATION INSTRUCTOR: Allison has eight years of experience teaching drama and English at both Washington and Wilson Junior High Schools in Manitowoc, and is also a busy actress and stage director.  She followed up her BSE degree (Theatre and English) from UW Whitewater with an MA in Drama and Theatre Studies from University College Cork, in Ireland.
